Mesut Ozil has ended speculation surrounding his future after signing a new lucrative contract with Arsenal that keeps him at the club until 2021.

Ozil’s future has been the subject of much debate in recent months as his contract was due to expire at the end of the season and talks have dragged regarding an extension.

Arsenal decided to cut their loses and cash-in on Alexis Sanchez this month rather than risk losing him for nothing in June but the Gunners retained hope they would find an agreement with Ozil.

It appears that hope was well placed as Ozil has now confirmed he’s signed a new contract with Arsenal while the north Londoners also announced the news on Arsenal.com.

The 28-year-old said in a statement that he took his time to make one of the most important decisions of his life but ultimately his heart lead him to signing a new deal with Arsenal and he’s hoping to achieve big things at the club.

Ozil Tweeted this evening:

This is a huge boost for Arsenal to tie the German international down to a long-term contract as it would have been a massive blow had Ozil walked away for nothing at the end of the season.

The Mirror cite a report from Bild that claims the playmaker snubbed interest from Man Utd, PSG and Barcelona to sign a three-and-a-half-year deal with Arsenal worth around £350,000-a-week so this is something of a coup for the Gunners.

Ozil and his partner are settled in London and they’ve just bought a new house in the capital ahead of their wedding this summer so it seems this may also have played an important role in his decision to stay at the Emirates.
