Liverpool Ready To Hijack Man Utd’s Attempts To Sign 26-Year-Old Serie A Star

The January transfer window in now closed so it’s time to look at those deals that didn’t get over the line and those being lined-up for the summer. Today, Stefan de Vrij is linked with a move to England…

Liverpool are ready to try and hijack Manchester United’s attempts to sign Stefan de Vrij after it was confirmed the defender will leave Lazio this summer, according to the Mirror.

De Vrij has been one of the most consistent centre-backs in Serie A since joining Lazio from Feyenoord in 2014 while he’s also become a regular with the Dutch national team.

However, the 26-year-old’s future at the Stadio Olimpico has been in serious doubt in recent months as his contract will expire in June and talks over an extension have failed to progress.

Lazio confirmed earlier this week that de Vrij will leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the season after they gave-up trying to come to an agreement over a new deal.

Understandably, there has been plenty of interest shown in the defender but the Mirror claim that de Vrij is keen on joining Manchester United and Lazio believe an offer is already on the table.

Jose Mourinho is expected to sign another centre-back this summer with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones tipped to leave and de Vrij could be an excellent long-term partner for Eric Bailly if he moves to the Manchester giants.

However, United could yet face stiff competition as the Mirror claim that Liverpool are among of number of clubs looking to trump their rivals to de Vrij’s signature this summer.

Jurgen Klopp has long been linked with the Dutch international and de Vrij would link-up with compatriot Virgil van Dijk if he opted for a move to Anfield over Old Trafford.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but there is no doubt it will be a major coup for Liverpool or United if they manage to snap-up de Vrij on a free transfer.
