Man Utd Ready To Meet £97m Release Clause To Sign South American Forward

The January transfer window in closed so it’s time to look at those deals that didn’t get over the line and those being lined-up for the summer. Today, Man Utd are linked with Mauro Icardi…

Manchester United are ready to meet Mauro Icardi’s £97m release clause but they’ll face stiff competition for the Inter Milan forward, according to the Sun.

Icardi has developed in to one of the best strikers in Serie A since joining Inter from Sampdoria in 2013 and he’s enjoying a fine campaign having scored 18 goals in his 22 league games so far.

However, the Argentinean international’s future at the San Siro has been cast in doubt as talks over a new deal have failed to progress and Icardi could be tempted to leave if Inter fail to qualify for the Champions League.

The 25-year-old’s form has attracted interest from England as the Sun claim United are ready to offer Icardi a fresh challenge by meeting his £97m release clause this summer.

Jose Mourinho is expected to be in the market for another striker as Zlatan Ibrahimovic will leave the club at the end of the season and it seems United are keen on luring Icardi to Old Trafford as a replacement.

The Mirror reported earlier this month that Mino Raiola was trying to help broker a deal that would see Icardi join United with the super-agent enjoying a close relationship with the Red Devils.

However, the newspaper cites a report from Italian paper Corriere dello Sport that claims United will face stiff competition for Icardi’s signature as Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are also keen on the striker.

Icardi’s wife Wanda Nara – who also acts as his agent – has suggested they are contemplating a move away from Inter this summer and will assess all offers that come in for the South American hitman.

Nara is quoted as saying by the Sun:

“I’m taking care of his future. At the very least, I must listen to them and evaluate the conditions and situation. Big clubs also wanted him in the past, but Mauro has always chosen Inter.

“He’s done a lot for these colours and never doubted what shirt he wanted to wear. He was chosen to be their captain at the age of 22, and unlike what’s been said, he has an excellent relationship with his team-mates.

“He wants the best for Inter, like Ausilio does, but I, and only I, will take care of Mauro’s future. Therefore, I have to evaluate his options: everything goes through me, so whoever wants Icardi must knock on my door first.”

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming months but I think Icardi would be a superb signing for United if they were able to win the race for his signature this summer.
