The transfer window is closed but managers are working hard on their plans for the summer so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, Chelsea join the chase for Jan Oblak…
Arsenal and Liverpool will face fresh competition from Chelsea for the signing of Atletico Madrid’s £88m-rated goalkeeper Jan Oblak this summer, according to the Express.
Oblak has proven himself to be one of the best keepers in world football since joining Atletico from Benfica in 2014 and he’s conceded just 14 goals in 29 La Liga appearances so far this season.
The 25-year-old’s outstanding form has caught the eye of clubs here in the Premier League as the Mirror reported last week that Arsenal and Liverpool have expressed their interest in signing Oblak this summer.
Arsene Wenger is in the market for another goalkeeper as Petr Cech – who turns 36 in May – has struggled at times this season and it seems the north Londoners have lined-up Oblak as a potential replacement.
Jurgen Klopp is also expected to sign a new number one this summer as Simon Mignolet has fallen out of favour and while Loris Karius has shown plenty of promise, Liverpool need a more reliable stopper if they’re to be genuine title contenders.
However, the duo will now face fresh competition for Oblak’s signature as the Express claim that Chelsea have now joined the chase to sign the Slovenian international this summer.
The Blues are at risk of losing Thibaut Courtois as he’s put contract talks on hold amid reports he’s keen on a return to Spain so it looks like Chelsea bosses are now eyeing Oblak as a potential replacement.
The Atletico keeper is under contract until 2021 but the Express says he has a release clause in his current deal that will allow him to leave if a club agrees to pay £88m.
That would smash the world record fee for a goalkeeper but Oblak is world class and I think he’d be a superb signing if Arsenal, Chelsea or Liverpool were able to lure him to England this summer.
