Manchester United and Chelsea are eyeing £87m-rated Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak in-case Real Madrid lure David de Gea or Thibaut Courtois to Spain, according to a report in the Express.
Madrid are in the market for a new No.1 to replace Keylor Navas this summer and the newspaper says the Spanish giants have made De Gea and Courtois their top targets.
De Gea has been constantly linked with a move to the Bernabeu in recent years while Courtois has hinted he’d like to return to the Spanish capital to be nearer his two children.
It means United and Chelsea are bracing themselves for interest from Madrid at the end of the season and it looks like the duo have lined-up an ambitious target if either club lose their current first choice keeper.
The Express are citing a report from Don Balon that claims United and Chelsea have identified Oblak as a potential new recruit and are keeping a close eye on on the Atletico stopper ahead of the summer.
The Slovenian international has developed in to one of the best keepers in world football since joining Atletico from Benfica in 2014 and he’s conceded just 15 goals in 31 La Liga appearances so far this season.
The 25-year-old produced another magnificent performance during the Madrid derby at the weekend as he helped Atletico secure a 1-1 draw and it seems his impressive form has caught the attention of clubs here in the Premier League.
However, any move for Oblak won’t be cheap as the Express claim his contract includes a release clause worth £87m and Atletico are unlikely to sell for anything less as his deal runs until 2021.
That would represent a world record fee for a goalkeeper as it would smash the £37.5m Manchester City paid for Emerson last summer so it would obviously be a significant outlay.
However, we’ll have to wait and see how things progress as United and Chelsea will only move for Oblak if De Gea or Courtois leave and that’s still a long way from happening.
