Arsenal have made contact with Real Madrid to discuss a potential deal to sign Karim Benzema as the Spaniard’s look to cash-in on the £70m-rated hitman this summer, according to reports in Spain via TeamTalk.

Benzema has been one of the most prolific strikers in Europe since joining Madrid from Lyon in 2009 as he’s provided 190 goals and 114 assists to help the club win three Champions League’s, two La Liga’s and a host of other domestic cups.

However, Benzema has endured the worst goal-scoring season of his career as he’s managed to register just 5 La Liga goals and 9 in all competitions so far – which is the first time he’s not found double figures in over a decade.

It’s led to speculation that the French international will be one of the most high-profile names to be sacrificed this summer as Zinedine Zidane looks to overhaul his squad following a disappointing domestic campaign.

Arsenal have been linked with Benzema in virtually every transfer window over the past five years and once again the media are putting our name forward as potential suitors foe the 30-year-old this summer.

TeamTalk are citing a report from Diario Gol that claims Arsenal have opened talks with Madrid about signing Benzema and made it clear we’re willing to pay £35m for the out-of-form striker.

However, a deal is unlikely to be reached as the Spanish publication says Madrid are demanding £70m for Benzema and Arsenal are not prepared to pay that kind of money for the ageing Frenchman.

Arsene Wenger has been a long-term fan of Benzema’s so it’s no surprise that we keep getting linked but, despite these fresh reports, I think there is no chance we’ll sign the former Lyon hitman this summer.

We’ve broken our transfer record twice over the past 10 months to sign Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang so an expensive striker is the last thing the club will be splashing out on.
