The transfer window may be closed but managers are working hard on their plans for the summer so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, Chelsea are linked with Antoine Griezmann…
Chelsea are hoping to beat Manchester United and Barcelona to the signing of Antoine Griezmann after holding secret talks with the Atletico Madrid forward, according to a report by TeamTalk.
Griezmann has developed in to one of the best strikers in European football since joining Atletico from Real Sociedad in 2014 having provided 110 goals and 38 assists in his 205 appearances.
The French international is enjoying another fine campaign with his 27 goals and 13 assists helping fire Atletico to the semi-finals of the Europa League while they’re also second in the La Liga table.
Griezmann has been linked with a move away from Atletico this summer with TeamTalk claiming that Manchester United are hoping to finally land the forward after failing to get a deal agreed last year.
Jose Mourinho needs to strengthen his squad if United are to compete with the likes of Man City and Griezmann would be a world class replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic following his move to the MLS.
However, Barcelona have also been strongly linked with the Frenchman and it looks like United will also face fresh competition from Chelsea as TeamTalk are carrying a report that claims the Blues have held secret talks with Griezmann’s camp.
The report says former Atletico striker Diego Forlan leaked the news during a recent interview and says Griezmann could be tempted by a move to Stamford Bridge to link-up with compatriots N’Golo Kante, Olivier Giroud and Tiemoue Bakayoko.
Antonio Conte’s position as manager is in doubt but Roman Abramovich is pressing ahead with Chelsea’s summer business and it would be a sensational coup if they could lure Griezmann to west London.
However, TeamTalk say any move would be dependent on Chelsea qualifying for the Champions League – which looks highly unlikely as they’re five points off the pace with just three games remaining.
The report goes on to claim that Atletico haven’t given up hope of the Frenchman signing a new deal but as it stands there is nothing they can do to prevent him leaving if likes of Chelsea, United and Barcelona agree to meet his current £88m buyout clause.
It’s going to be interesting to see how things develop over the coming weeks but I personally think if Griezmann does come to England, he’ll end up at Old Trafford rather than Stamford Bridge.
