Manchester United are in pole position to sign Lazio’s £80m-rated star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as Jose Mourinho looks to sign two midfielders, according to the Daily Mail.
Milinkovic-Savic has emerged as one of the hottest properties in European football since breaking in to the Lazio first team following his move to Italy from Genk in 2015.
The 23-year-old has provided 13 goals and 9 assists in all competitions so far this season to help Simone Inzaghi’s side challenge for a Champions League qualification spot in Serie A.
His impressive form has caught the attention of several top clubs throughout Europe with the Daily Mail claiming that Manchester United, Tottenham and Barcelona among those to have registered their interest in recent months.
Mauricio Pochettino is expected to be in the market for a new creative midfielder amid doubts over the future of Mousa Dembele and it seems Milinkovic-Savic is firmly on the Tottenham bosses radar.
However, Spurs face stiff competition and the Daily Mail are citing a report from Mundo Deportivo that claims United are in to pole position to sign Milinkovic-Savic after Barca have cooled their interest.
The young attacking midfielder still has four years left to run on his contract and the report says Lazio aren’t prepared to let their star man leave on the cheap so are demanding at least £80m for his signature.
That figure has been enough to put off Barcelona and it remains to be seen whether the likes of Tottenham could afford that kind of money but United have the financial muscle to meet Lazio’s demands if they wanted to.
According to the Daily Mail, Mourinho is in the market for two new central midfielders as Michael Carrick will retire in June while Marouane Fellaini is being tipped to leave when his contract expires at the end of the season.
The paper says United are hoping to wrap up a deal for Milinkovic-Savic and have also made an offer for Shakhtar Donetsk’s £50m-rated Brazilian midfielder Fred.
If they could secure both players it will set the Red Devils back around £130m so it looks like it’s going to be another summer of heavy investment at Old Trafford as Mourinho looks to build a squad capable of competing with Man City.
