Manchester United have stolen a march on Arsenal after opening talks to sign Dries Mertens and are prepared to meet his £25m release clause, according to a report by TeamTalk.
Mertens has been in excellent form since joining Napoli from PSV Eindhoven in 2013 with the forward scoring 89 goals and providing a further 58 assists in 232 appearances so far.
The Belgian international has played a key role in helping Napoli challenge Juventus for the Serie A title this season having provided 21 goals and 12 assists in his 46 games.
The 30-year-old’s performances have caught the attention of clubs here in the Premier League as the Sun reported last week that Arsenal and Man Utd were showing a keen interest in luring Mertens to England.
The Gunners are gearing-up for a busy summer of change and whoever replaces Arsene Wenger as manager would no doubt love to have a player of Mertens’ quality at his disposal.
However, it looks like United have stolen a march on Arsenal as TeamTalk are reporting today that Jose Mourinho has already held talks with Mertens’ representatives about a move to Old Trafford.
The report says United are now ready to meet the players release clause – which is set at just £25m – so there is very little Napoli can do to prevent the forward from leaving if he wants to join the Red Devils this summer.
United are expected to be in the market for another forward after losing Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Mourinho could be eyeing Mertens as a potential replacement for Anthony Martial amid speculation over his future.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop but I think Mertens would be an excellent signing for United – or indeed Arsenal – if either club was able to sign him this summer.
