Should Arsene Rotate For The Cup Matches?

As we approach tonights match against Ipswich, the question on most supporters’ mind is whether the Boss is going to extensively rotate the squad for the match. In his interviews, Arsene has stated the need for first team players to take a break after being involved in so many matches, yet yesterday he claimed changes may be minimal. Tonight’s match at the Emirates will be our 8th match this January and there’s still another to come in the FA Cup 4th round this Sunday. We have been playing two games a week for most of the month  so there is much logic in rotating for each game.

However, much as I would like to believe that the squad players are just as good as the first team players, I just cannot put my confidence in the likes of Arshavin, Rosicky and Bendtner for such an important match. On paper our squad of internationals looked to be the best in the Premier League but in reality, the woeful displays of Arshavin, Rosicky, Eboue et al have really put a dent into our hopes of challenging for all honours this season. Steve MacMahon, now a pundit here in Asia, keeps going on about the need to play your best side in every game. While I don’t often agree with him, there is absolutely truth in what he has.

One very important thing that rotating the squad would disrupt is momentum. Since the defeat at Portman Road, we have got back into our groove, with three wins on the trot, scoring three goals in each while only conceding 1. We really looked like a team that can go on to win something this year. I am afraid we might lose our “mojo” if Arsene tries to tinker with the squad going into Cup matches.

There is no doubt that some players will need to rest but let’s keep the core intact. Players such as Fabregas, Nasri and Van Persie should always start and hopefully kill off the match by the 60-70th minute. Then we can bring them off for much needed rest. Anyway, most of them have been missing matches through injury so it is not like they have been playing the whole season.

The League Cup is there for the taking. Let’s not screw this up.

how would you feel if you were denilson/bentner/rosicky, and you didn’t start the game when you have been starting in all of the cup games so far?
These players are already disappointed about not starting in more EPL games…and now you bench them for the cup games too?!?!

If I were Rosicky, etc, I would think to myself, “perhaps it’s time to leave Arsenal and seek out a new club where I am wanted”.
Suddenly, we don’t have such a big deep squad anymore. And god forbid the injuries don’t strike then.

Managing a big squad like Arsenal isn’t as simple as “the need to play your best side in every game”. It’s about keeping the group happy (as best as possible), and these cup games achieve that. EPL and Champions league is a different story.

Starting Bendtner, Denilson, Arshavin, Rosicky (ill anyway) etc is a must in these games.

I seriously belive playing around with the side will losse the momentum from Saturday and we might have to bring some players during halftime or early in the second half .

Wenger should play van persie walcott nasri fabregas and song . all 5 of them are critcal to todays win

My Theory is 4 is the maximum number to rotate from the first 11.
Against Wigan apart from the verminator that was our strongest side(debate on goalie)
We should be able to bring in Gibbs Charmak denilson and Arshavin for Clichy RVP Wilshire and Walcott without loosing much mojo.
They should hover all be on the bench

Hey thekid, finally there is an article that you wrote that make sense. Yea, we shouldn’t rotate Arshavin, Rosicky, Eboue, Bendt, Arsenal should sell them away – in fact sell the entire team left the first 11.

we should play only the first 11 “keeps going on about the need to play your best side in every game”.. these 11 are players of steel. and when they gets injured, we must never stop them from playing as “One very important thing that rotating the squad would disrupt is momentum”

Anyway, i agree with you, our fringe players are “woeful displays”. And should never gets the chance to play in ARsenal again. We gooners should write to football league to take away all the goals and assist scored by Arshivin this season since hance take away 12 points he had won according to you and your proclaim arsenal fans felt of his “woeful displays”

your ideology and football management is just awesome! why the hack are you a football writer? I can see you are better than the world’s best Wenger when it comes to grooming players. Go out there and perhaps start manage a kids club or something rather than your computer games!!!

Arsenal have won more fans in the last 6 years than any other club, and fans = income. Wenger really does not care about the carling or FA cup, they bring in no money. Its sad, but true.
Personally, I don’t think Bendtner is good enough, however it is very hard keeping decent players happy on the bench. Nasri, walcott, rosicky, song and gibbs were not needed last night. It gives them time to get their legs back.
Does anyone remember when Veira and Henry came back from the world cup? they were virtual passengers
for 2 months, had no energy and enthusiasm. They are still human beings even though they earn a bit more than I do!
I’m sure wenger has his scouts out looking for new players (messi is busy this week) What about re-signing
Henry, he’s the same age as Drogba? Arsenal create (and miss) more chances than anyone else, and he puts them away, or did! Cameo roles?
