Talks Underway: Man Utd & Tottenham In Negotiations Over Deal For £75m Star
Manchester United are in talks with Tottenham over the signing of Toby Alderweireld with a potential £75m deal being discussed between the two clubs
The summer transfer window is now open and managers are working hard on their transfer targets so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, Man Utd have opened talks for Toby Alderweireld…
Manchester United are in talks with Tottenham over the signing of Toby Alderweireld with a potential £75m deal being discussed between the two clubs, according to the Mirror.
Alderweireld has been one of the best defenders in European football since joining Tottenham from Atletico Madrid in 2015 but his future in north London is in serious doubt.
Tottenham are to trigger a one-year automatic extension to Alderweireld’s contract tying him to the club until 2020 but that new deal includes a release clause that allows the defender to leave for just £25m next summer.
The Belgian international has failed to agree terms over a new long-term deal so Tottenham are being forced to cash-in this summer while they can still command a sizeable transfer fee.
United have been strongly linked with a swoop for Alderweireld in recent months as Jose Mourinho looks to build a squad capable of competing with Manchester City for the title next season.
It looks like United have now formalised their interest as the Mirror claim that formal transfer talks are now underway between the Red Devils and Tottenham over a potential deal for Alderweireld’s signature.
He would be a significant upgrade on the likes of Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof while Eric Bailly’s future at Old Trafford has been called in to question after he struggled for game-time during the second half of the campaign.
A fee in the region of around £40m-£55m being suggested in some corners of the media, however, it looks like Spurs have different ideas as the reports says chairman Daniel Levy is demanding £75m.
That would equal the record fee for a defender that Liverpool paid to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in January and it would be a huge outlay for a player that’s now 29-years-old.
We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but Alderweireld would be an excellent signing for United if they manage to get a deal agreed with Tottenham.
