Jose Mourinho is pushing for Manchester United to wrap-up a proposed £53m deal to sign Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred by next week, according to a report by TeamTalk.

Mourinho knows he needs to strengthen his squad if United are to compete with the likes of Manchester City for the title next season and a new central midfielder is a priority.

Michael Carrick has retired while Marouane Fellaini is set to leave on a free transfer when his contract expires next month after failing to agree terms over a new deal and Fred has been identified as a prime transfer target.

United have emerged as favourites ahead of City to sign the South American with the Manchester Evening News reporting that the Red Devils have been in advanced negotiations to sign Fred in recent weeks.

TeamTalk claims that a proposed £53m deal is close to completion, however, nothing has been signed as yet and it seems Mourinho is growing impatient the longer the saga drags on.

The report cites the Sun as saying that Mourinho has told United chiefs to wrap-up a deal to sign Fred by next week or withdraw from negotiations and move on to other targets.

The Brazilian international has previously suggested that he will wait until after the World Cup to resolve his future but it doesn’t look like Mourinho is prepared to hang around much longer.

Fred will be in the north-west of England next week to play for Brazil in a friendly at Anfield on June 5 so United may try and take the opportunity to get a deal secured while the midfielder is in the country.

The 25-year-old would be an excellent signing if United could get this proposed transfer wrapped-up as Fred has been in superb form since joining Shakhtar Donetsk from Internacional in 2013.
