Arsenal Transfer News: Gunners In Talks To Sign £44m French Star

By on June 3, 2018

The summer transfer window is now open and managers are working hard on their transfer targets so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, Arsenal are linked with Benjamin Pavard…

Arsenal have made contact with Stuttgart to discuss a possible deal to sign £44m-rated centre-back Benjamin Pavard this summer, according to L’Equipe via the Metro.

New boss Unai Emery is looking to strengthen the squad left behind by Arsene Wenger and tightening-up the back four is a priority after we conceded a whopping 51 Premier League goals last season.

Laurent Koscielny is facing around six months on the sidelines due to an Achilles injury, Shkodran Mustafi has failed to live up to his price-tag following a £35m move from Valencia two years ago and Per Mertesacker has retired.

So Arsenal need to sign at least one new centre-back this summer and we’ve been linked with a number of players in recent weeks including Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Caglar Soyuncu and Jonny Evans.

However, the Metro are citing a report from L’Equipe that claims Arsenal have also been in touch with Stuttgart to discuss Pavard and to gather more information on the young defender ahead of a potential swoop.

The French publication says Stuttgart are willing to sell if a club offers £44m but we aren’t the only team in the running as Borussia Dortmund, Marseille and Napoli are also showing a keen interest.

Pavard joined Stuttgart from Lille in 2016 and played every minute in the Bundesliga last season with his excellent form seeing him named by Dider Deschamps in the France squad ahead of the World Cup finals.

The 22-year-old is a huge talent and has the potential to become a top class defender so he would no doubt be an excellent addition to the squad if Arsenal ended up bring him to the Emirates.

However, £44m is a lot of money for us to spend on a centre-back when Emery also needs to strengthen between the sticks and in midfield so I’m not convinced we’ll be prepared to meet Stuttgart’s asking price for Pavard this summer.
