Liverpool Ready To Hijack Tottenham’s Attempts To Sign 26-Year-Old Former Bayern Star
Tottenham have been dealt a blow as Liverpool have joined the chase to sign Stoke City attacker Xherdan Shaqiri in a bargain £12m deal this summer.
The summer transfer window is now open and managers are working hard on their transfer targets so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, Liverpool join the chase for Xherdan Shaqiri….
Tottenham have been dealt a transfer blow as the Mirror claim Liverpool have joined the chase to sign Stoke City attacker Xherdan Shaqiri in a bargain £12m deal this summer.
Shaqiri made his name at FC Basel after coming through their youth ranks before earning a move to Bayern Munich in 2012 where he helped win two Bundesliga titles and the Champions League.
A short 6-month spell at Inter Milan didn’t work out but the Switzerland international proved to be a solid signing for Stoke City since joining the Potters in the summer of 2015.
The winger provided 8 goals and 7 assists last season but it wasn’t enough to prevent Stoke from being relegated to the Championship having finished 19th in the Premier League last campaign.
However, Shaqiri could be set for a move back to the top flight as he has a relegation release clause which allows him to leave this summer for just £12m – the same fee Stoke paid Inter two years ago.
The Metro reported earlier this week that Tottenham were showing a keen interest in signing Shaqiri as Mauricio Pochettino looks to add some depth to his attacking options ahead of next season.
Spurs have qualified for the Champions League after finishing third last year and Pochettino wants to push them to the next level with Shaqiri seemingly identified as a target.
However, Tottenham will now face stiff competition as the Mirror claim Liverpool have also expressed their interest in signing Shaqiri as Jurgen Klopp looks to strengthen his attack this summer.
The Reds have one of the most formidable front three’s in Europe but they need back-up for the likes of Mo Salah and Sadio Mane and it looks like Klopp is eyeing Shaqiri an an alternative to Nabil Fekir, with Lyon digging their heels in over the Frenchman.
We’ll have to see how things progress but competition for Shaqiri will increase if he impresses for Switzerland at the World Cup so Liverpool or Tottenham may want to act fast if they want to sign him.
The 26-year-old would be a bargain at just £12m and the pacey attacker can play anywhere across the front three so I think he’d be a solid signing for either Liverpool or Spurs if they got a deal agreed.
