Liverpool have stolen a march on Arsenal after tabling a £22m bid to sign Bayer Leverkusen Bernd Leno this summer, according to Bild via the Mirror.
Jurgen Klopp is in the market for a new number one to replace Loris Karius after he made two costly mistakes during Liverpool’s Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid last month.
The Merseysiders have been strongly linked with Jan Oblak and Alisson Becker but they’ve been forced to look at cheaper alternatives due to Atletico Madrid and Roma’s hefty valuations and it seems Leno is now on Klopp’s radar.
The 26-year-old has been one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the Bundesliga since joining Leverkusen from Stuttgart in 2011 and he kept 10 clean sheets in his 33 Bundesliga games last season.
Leno’s impressive form has caught the attention of Arsenal with the Daily Star reporting earlier this week that the Gunners were plotting a swoop for the German international this summer after reportedly holding preliminary talks last month.
New boss Unai Emery is desperate to sign a new first choice goalkeeper as Petr Cech is 36 and David Ospina is expected to leave after failing to hold down a regular place in recent years.
However, it looks like Liverpool are trying to hijack Arsenal’s attempts to sign Leno as the Mirror are citing a report from Bild that claims the Merseysiders have now tabled a £22m bid for the Leverkusen stopper.
The German publication says the offer has ensured Liverpool are now in pole position to sign Leno this summer and the bid comes close to the keepers’ reported release clause.
Leverkusen expect their number one to leave over the coming weeks and have already signed Lukas Hradecky as his replacement so a deal is there to be done at the right price.
We’ll have to wait and see whether Arsenal react to Liverpool’s bid by placing an offer of their own but I think Leno would be an excellent addition if either club could lure him to England this summer.
