Liverpool & Chelsea Given Green Light To Sign La Liga Star In £44m Deal
Liverpool and Chelsea have been given the green light to sign Jasper Cillessen after Barcelona agreed to sell the goalkeeper for £44m this summer
The summer transfer window is open and managers are working hard on their transfer targets so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, the latest on Jasper Cillessen….
Liverpool and Chelsea have been given the green light to sign Jasper Cillessen after Barcelona agreed to sell the goalkeeper for £44m this summer, according to a report by TeamTalk.
Cillessen was once considered as one of the top keepers in Europe having helped Ajax win 3 Eredivisie titles during a five-year spell at the Dutch giants before earning a move to Barcelona in 2016. His time at the Nou Camp hasn’t gone according to plan as Cillessen has played second fiddle to Marc-Ter Stegen and made just 2 appearances in the league and Champions League last season.
It’s led to intense speculation that Cillessen is eyeing a move this summer in search of regular first team football and the Daily Mail reported recently that Liverpool and Chelsea have expressed their interest in luring him to England but Barcelona were initially reluctant to lose their number two.
However, TeamTalk are carrying a reporting from Don Balon that claims the La Liga giants have now decided to cash-in and informed the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea they can sign Cillessen if they put £44m on the table – which is a reduction on his £52m release clause.
It’s reported by the Spanish publication that Barca want to use the money raised from Cillessen’s sale to strengthen other areas of the squad and will sign a cheaper back-up for ter Stegen.
Jurgen Klopp is in the market for a new number one as Simon Mignolet is expected to leave after falling out of favour while Loris Karius’s future is in doubt following his horror show during the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.
Liverpool have been strongly linked with the likes of Alisson Becker and Jan Oblak in recent weeks but Roma and Atletico Madrid are demanding huge money for their keepers so Klopp may be tempted to go for Cillessen as a cheaper alternative.
However, Liverpool may face stiff competition from Chelsea as the Blues are also being tipped to sign a new stopper amid speculation that Thibaut Courtois is set for a move back to Spain after failing to sign a new contract.
We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but Cillessen is a top keeper and I think the Dutch international would be an excellent signing for Liverpool or Chelsea if either club was successful in bringing him to the Premier League.
