Chelsea and Liverpool are ready to battle-it-out over a deal to sign £30m-rated Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel this summer, according to a report by TeamTalk.
Schmeichel – son of Manchester United legend Peter – started his career at Manchester City but has been Leicester’s first choice keeper since joining the club from Leeds United in 2011 and has racked up almost 300 appearances for the Midlands club over the past seven years.
The 31-year-old played a key role in helping Leicester clinch a shock Premier League title in 2016 and he represented Denmark at this summers World Cup finals but the Dane’s crashed out to Croatia at the last-16 stage despite Schmeichel’s penalty-shoot out heroics.
His impressive performances have caught the attention of top Premier League clubs as TeamTalk claim Liverpool and Chelsea are among the clubs to have registered their interest in signing Schmeichel this summer.
Jurgen Klopp is in the market for a new number one as Simon Mignolet is expected to leave Anfield after losing his place last season while Loris Karius’s future is in doubt after he made two costly mistakes during Liverpool’s Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.
Chelsea are also on the look out for a new goalkeeper as Thibaut Courtois has just one year left on his contract and is yet to sign an extension amid strong rumours linking the Belgian international with a return to Spain.
Both Liverpool and Chelsea have been linked with Alisson Becker in recent months but with Roma demanding huge money for the Brazilian international it seems the duo have now set their sights on Schmeichel as a cheaper alternative.
Coincidentally, Roma are also being credited with an interest in the Foxes stopper in-case Alisson is lured away from the Stadio Olimpico so Liverpool and Chelsea could face further competition from Italy.
We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but the Metro suggest that Leicester will demand at least £30m for Schmeichel’s signature so Liverpool and Chelsea will still need to pay big money to land the Danish star.
