Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea will have to pay £88.5m if they want to sign Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic this summer, according to reports in Italy via TeamTalk.
Kovacic came through the youth system at Dinamo Zagreb and emerged as one of the best young midfielders in Europe before being snapped-up by Inter Milan in 2013. He continued to enhance his reputation during his two-year spell at the San Siro to earn a big-money move to Madrid in 2015.
However, his time at the Bernabeu hasn’t gone to plan as Kovacic struggled to hold down a regular place having started just 10 La Liga games last season and completed 90 minutes on just four occasions so it was no surprise when the midfielder went public last week with his desire to leave Madrid in search of regular football this summer.
The 24-year-old’s situation has alerted clubs here in the Premier league as the Daily Star reported last week that Manchester United and Tottenham have both made contact with Madrid to express their interest in signing Kovacic.
Jose Mourinho has already signed Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk but the United boss knows he needs to further strengthen his squad if they’re to compete with Man City and it seems the Portuguese coach is eyeing Kovacic amid speculation surrounding the future of Ander Herrera.
Mauricio Pochettino is also expected to be in the market for midfield reinforcements as he tries to make Tottenham genuine title contenders and Kovacic could be viewed as a potential replacement for Mousa Dembele – who’s being linked with a move this summer.

However, it seems Chelsea have also joined the race for the Croatian internationals signature as TeamTalk are citing a report from Sky Italia that claims Madrid have informed the Blues they’ll need to pay £88.5m if they want to land Kovacic.
Chelsea have been quiet in the market so far this summer as they look to resolve their managerial situation but they could be eyeing a swoop for Kovacic as Danny Drinkwater is expected to leave Stamford Bridge after a disappointing year in west London.

It remains to be seen whether the likes of United, Spurs or Chelsea will be prepared to pay the £88.5m Madrid are demanding but Kovacic would be an excellent signing if any of the trio could get a deal agreed this summer.
