Liverpool are trying to hijack Tottenham’s attempts to sign Jack Grealish after opening talks with Aston Villa over the £40m-rated midfielder, according to the Mirror.
Grealish has been with Villa his entire career having joined the clubs youth system as a youngster and he’s progressed through the ranks to become a vital first team player at Villa Park. The 22-year-old played a key role in Villa’s promotion push last season before they eventually lost to Fulham in the Championship play-off final at Wembley.
The England Under-21 international is now widely expected to leave his boyhood club and he’s attracted interest from the Premier League with the Mirror reporting recently that Tottenham were the clear favourites to sign Grealish this summer.
Mauricio Pochettino is in the market for reinforcements as he looks to try and turn Spurs in the genuine title contenders and Grealish may be lined-up as a potential replacement for Mousa Dembele – who’s being linked with a move away from north London.
However, Liverpool could be ready to hijack Tottenham’s attempts to sign the midfielder as the Mirror are now reporting that the Reds have opened talks with Aston Villa about a potential deal.
Jurgen Klopp is expected to remain active in the transfer market over the next month despite already bringing in Fabinho and Naby Keita and it seems the Liverpool coach is showing a keen interest in taking Grealish to Anfield.
The newspaper says Villa put an initial £40m asking price on the youngsters head but they may be forced to lower their expectations due to their financial difficulties with the cash-strapped Midland’s club under pressure to raise funds for boss Steve Bruce.
Grealish is the obvious asset that could be sacrificed and it looks like Liverpool and Tottenham are now ready to battle-it-out over a deal to sign the talented young midfielder this summer.
