Mateo Kovacic has refused to rule out leaving Real Madrid amid reports linking him with a potential £88m move to Manchester United, Tottenham or Chelsea, according to a report by TeamTalk.

Kovacic made his name at Dinamo Zagreb after coming through their youth system and developed in to one of the most exciting young midfielders in Europe after being snapped-up by Inter Milan in 2013 before moving to Madrid two years later.

However, his time at the Bernabeu hasn’t gone to plan as he’s struggled to force his way in to the first team and was restricted to just 10 La Liga starts last season with Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Casemiro nailed on to start in the middle of the park.

Understandably, Kovacic has expressed his frustration as his situation in Spain and TeamTalk claim that Man Utd, Tottenham and Chelsea are among the clubs to have expressed their interest in luring the midfielder to England this summer.

Kovacic has enjoyed a solid World Cup after helping Croatia reach the semi-finals where they’ll take on England on Wednesday night for a place in the final and the report says Madrid president Florentino Perez has slapped an £88m price-tag on his head.

It remains to be seen if any potential suitor would meet that asking price but the 24-year-old has now refused to rule out a move this summer. When quizzed about leaving Madrid and the reported interest from England, Kovacic is quoted by TeamTalk as saying:

“If I want to stay at Real Madrid? We’ll see.”

Jose Mourinho has already signed Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk this summer but the United boss knows he needs to further strengthen his squad if United are to compete with Man City next season and Kovacic is being eyed amid speculation surrounding the future of Ander Herrera.

Mauricio Pochettino is also expected to be in the market for another midfielder as he looks to turn Spurs in to genuine title contenders and Kovacic could be viewed as a potential replacement for Mousa Dembele – who’s being linked with a move this summer.

However, despite on-going doubts over Antonio Conte’s future, Chelsea are also tracking the Croatian star and the Blues could be plotting a swoop for Kovacic to replace Danny Drinkwater as he’s expected to leave Stamford Bridge after a disappointing spell in west London.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks as no decision will be made over Kovacic’s future until after the World Cup but I think he’d be an excellent signing for any of the English trio.
