Arsenal Still Missing Vermaelen Despite Improvements

Arsenal news

Ahead of the FA Cup 4th Round tie with Huddersfield, Arsene Wenger had some good injury news to share with the fans. Speaking in his interview for Arsenal TV, the boss said that Diaby, Squillaci and Almunia will all be returning to the squad as they have recovered from their injuries. It would be no suprised if the Boss started with the three of them given the other players had hardly gotten a rest this month. Moreover, we have a tough home match on Tuesday against Everton to contend with.

I guess this marks the first time in a long while that our first team injury list is a short as now. Correct me if I am wrong but the only players missing now are Fabianski, Rosicky and Vermaelen. Personally, I didn’t even know that Rosicky was injured, just thought that he was dropped after the performance at home against Leeds. Nonetheless we wished him a quick recovery.

The one that worries me most is Vermaelen. He will be out until at least March, this after a seemingly small injury which was supposed to be just a couple of days. I remembered this happened to Rosicky as well, and we didn’t see him for a year and a half. Although the defense looks quite solid at the moment, I have a strong feeling that we are going to be really missing the presence of Vermaelen soon. More so if Arsene does not bring in another centerback in the January transfer window (which looks very much the case as it stand now)

I am not going to go on about transfers. Much have been written about it so I am just leaving it all in the hands of the manager. In Arsene we trust!

Everyone seems to be falling for the Arsenal can’t defend line, they need a GK and a central defender. Alan Hanson says so on on MOTD week after week, so it must be true. Please have a look at the league table; arsenal has only let in 1 more goal than ManU after having played more of the top clubs and without their arguably best defender.

Yeah, I agree John. I think people have just convinced themselves that our backline is rubbish. I admit there have been some weaknesses but now that the CBs are used to playing together our record has improved massively. We’ve only let in 1 goal in the last 4 games and that one was unstoppable. Only 3 in the whole of january, so looking at the stats we actually have the best defence in the league now.
Arsenal Kid – Frimpong is also injured, out for the season

I think the general panic stems from two things:
    a) What happens if there is a nasty injury to disrupt Dj-Kos?
    b) Believing the so-called pundits and remembering the past 2 years.

I think that there is merit to (a) however, 3 top-class center backs who are 25 or below, is probably the most that a team can hold – and not have a player revolt. What happens when you buy that 4th center-half and you have FOUR fit top-class central defenders? I think that is an excess especially when you can move a right-back (Sagna/Vrsi?) into the middle or worst-case Song (although I like seeing Song-Wilshire playing box-to-box)
Stop believing the pundits. Arsenal’s defense is fine. If Vermaelen does not return/has a career threatening injury, it would suck but I would rather see them pickup an unknown talent at a reasonable price, than be held to ransom for a Gary Cahill who is definitely NOT worth $15M.
