Manchester United have opened transfer talks with Leicester City over a deal to sign Harry Maguire and the £65m defender is confident a deal will be agreed, according to the Mirror.

Jose Mourinho has admitted he would ideally like to sign two more players before the start of the season having been frustrated by the clubs lack of activity in the market with third-choice goalkeeper Lee Grant, young full-back Diogo Dalot and midfielder Fred the only new arrivals so far.

A new centre-back is reportedly a priority as doubts continue over Phil Jones and Chris Smalling while there is interest being shown in Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly after the pair failed to hold down first team places during the second half of last season.

Maguire has emerged as a prime target after enjoying a superb World Cup that saw him play a key role in helping Gareth Southgate’s England side reach the semi-finals before narrowly losing to Croatia.

The Mirror claim that Manchester United have now stepped-up their pursuit after making contact with Leicester to inform them of their interest in signing Maguire this summer.

The newspaper says Leicester value the defender at around £65m but despite that hefty asking price Maguire is reportedly confident he will be a United player by the end of the window – just in time to line-up against his former club on the opening day of the season.

Leicester will no doubt do all they can to hang on to the 25-year-old and the Mirror claim they are prepared to offer him a new deal worth in excess of £100,000-a-week but Maguire is tempted by the prospect of playing for a club like United.

Maguire has enjoyed a meteoric rise since coming through the youth ranks at Sheffield United as he made his name during a three-year spell at Hull City before making a £17m move to the King Power last summer.

He continued to enhance his reputation with the Foxes to earn a place in England’s World Cup starting eleven and it looks like his performances in Russia have convinced United to launch a big-money move for his signature.
