There is plenty of Manchester United gossip doing the rounds in the papers with the English giants linked with a whole host of star names. Today, United are eyeing a swoop for Dries Mertens…
Manchester United are ready to turn their attention to £35m Napoli star Dries Mertens after struggling to sign first choice target Ivan Perisic, according to the Express.
Jose Mourinho has admitted his disappointment at United’s lack of business in the transfer market as the Red Devils have only signed third-choice goalkeeper Lee Grant, young full-back Diogo Dalot and midfielder Fred – who’s the only one of the trio expected to be a first team regular.
The Portuguese coach confirmed last week that he would ideally like to sign two more players before the transfer window closes on August 9th with a centre-back and wide attacker reportedly on the agenda.
The likes of Willian and Gareth Bale have been linked with a move to Man Utd in recent weeks but the Express claims that Perisic is Mourinho’s prime target following his heroics for Croatia at the World Cup.
However, United are being forced to look at alternatives as Inter Milan are determined to hold on to Perisic and the newspaper is citing a report from Transfermarketweb that says Mourinho is now ready to turn his attention to Mertens.
The Italian outlet says Napoli are willing to cash-in on the 31-year-old if Man Utd put £35m on the table despite Mertens playing a key role for the club since joining from PSV Eindhoven in 2013.
The attacker has provided 90 goals and 58 assists in his 233 appearances for Napoli over the past five years – including 21 goals last season to help then push Juventus all the way in the Serie A title race.
Mertens also enjoyed an excellent World Cup as he played a key role for semi-finalists Belgian and it seems Man Utd could now be ready to offer him the chance to prove himself in the Premier League this summer.
