Manchester United have opened talks with Bayern Munich over a deal to sign £44.5m-rated defender Jerome Boateng but Arsenal could try to hijack the deal, according to reports from Germany today.

Jose Mourinho is in the market to sign at least one more player before the transfer window shuts on Thursday evening after being left disappointed by United’s lack of transfer activity this summer with Brazilian midfielder Fred the only significant new addition to their squad.

A new centre-back is on the agenda as doubts continue over Phil Jones and Chris Smalling while Marcos Rojo and Victor Lindelof are being linked with moves away from Old Trafford and Man Utd have been linked with Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire in recent weeks.

However, with Tottenham and Leicester demanding huge money for the pair, United have looked at alternatives and Boateng has been touted as a potential target after expressing his desire to leave Bayern Munich in search of a new challenge.

The Mirror cite reports coming out of Germany that claim Manchester United chiefs have opened talks with Bayern over a £44.5m [€50m] deal for Boateng after their friendly at the Allianz Arena on Sunday.

However, United face stiff competition as Kicker says not only are Paris Saint-Germain sniffing around but Arsenal are also believed to be keen on Boateng so the north Londoners could look to hijack their rivals’ deal.

Unai Emery has already signed Sokratis from Borussia Dortmund but the Arsenal boss is still being tipped to buy another centre-back with Calum Chambers and Shkodran Mustafi both being linked with moves this summer.

We’ll have to wait and see how things progress but Boateng would be an excellent signing for United or Arsenal as he’s been one of the best centre-backs in the world since joining Bayern from Man City seven years ago.

The 29-year-old would offer a huge amount of experience as he’s won 6 Bundesliga titles, 4 domestic cups and the Champions League during his time at the Allianz Arena while he also helped lead Germany to the 2014 World Cup.
