BBC journalist David Ornstein has played down reports suggesting Arsenal have launched a late £89.9m bid to sign Barcelona attacker Ousmane Dembele.

Arsenal have been strongly linked with a move for the French international in recent weeks amid speculation Dembele was looking to leave Barcelona after struggling to establish himself following his big-money switch from Borussia Dortmund last summer.

The 21-year-old was restricted to just a handful of starts after being hampered by a serious hamstring injury for much of last season and his place in Ernesto Valverde’s first team this season is under threat following the arrival of Malcom from AS Roma.

The Sun cited reports coming out of Spain last night that suggested Arsenal were ready to offer Barcelona £10m to take Dembele on a season-long loan with a view to paying a further £90m to make the move permanent next summer.

The rumours intensified today as Spanish journalist Kike Marin – who works for newspaper El Confidential – claimed that Arsenal had made an £89.9m [€100m] bid to sign Dembele but he didn’t divulge any details on the structure of the deal.

He tweeted “Confirmed: #Arsenal has offered to #FCBarcelona € 100 million for Dembelé. The key is whether the French attacker wants to go or not. Time is running out…

Understandably, Arsenal fans were excited by the prospect of signing such a talented attacker but our joy was short-lived as respected BBC journalist David Ornstein was quick to play down the reports.

Marin insists the offer has been made but any deal looks highly unlikely to be pushed through at this stage as the transfer window closes at 5pm so time is running out for Arsenal to bring in any more players this summer.

I think our defence still looks weak as we could have done with signing a top class centre-back and we certainly lack a pacey winger in the mold of Dembele so it looks like the best we can hope for is battling for fourth place this season.
