South American Star Explains Why He Snubbed Man Utd Move Despite £8m Contract Offer
Diego Godin has confirmed he rejected a lucrative move to Manchester United this summer in order to stay with Atletico Madrid due to personal reasons
The Premier League transfer window may be closed but European clubs can still buy from English teams and managers are planning for the future so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip. Today, Diego Godin explains why he snubbed Man Utd…
Diego Godin has confirmed he rejected a lucrative move to Manchester United this summer in order to stay with Atletico Madrid due to personal reasons, according to the Mirror.
United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward spent much of the summer transfer window desperately trying to buy another centre-back after Jose Mourinho identified the position as one that needed strengthening due to on-going doubts over the likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.
The Manchester giants were linked with a whole host of top names over the past few months but they struggled to agree deals for the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire, Yerry Mina and Jerome Boateng.
Godin emerged as a late transfer target with ESPN one of several media outlets reporting on deadline day that Man Utd had offered to pay his £18m release clause and lure the centre-back with a bumper contract worth £8.1m-per-season – double what he’s currently on at Atletico.
The 32-year-old rejected United’s advances and opted to remain at the Metropolitano Stadium with the report suggesting that Godin had been rewarded with a new lucrative contract by the Spanish club.
However, while the Uruguayan international has confirm he rejected an offer from Old Trafford due to personal reasons, Godin has denied he has signed a new extension with Atletico.
When quizzed about the offer from United and renewing with Madrid, Godin is quoted as saying by the Mirror:
“I have not renewed. I have had offers, although I have decided to stay for personal reasons and I am only thinking about the final.
“But I have not extended my contract. I saw that news came out but I do not know where it came from.”

Godin would have been a superb short-term addition to the United squad as he’s been one of the best defenders in the world over the past few years but it seems he wanted to remain in the Spanish capital for at least another year.
