Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has offered his predictions ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Arsenal and Fulham’s visit to Tottenham today.

Maurizio Sarri kicked-off his reign as Chelsea manager with an impressive 3-0 victory over Huddersfield on the opening weekend of the new season but the Italian will face a much stiffer test this evening.

Arsenal head to Stamford Bridge for the 5.30pm kick off looking to bounce back following their 2-0 defeat to Manchester City last Sunday but Unai Emery saw enough positive signs to give him confidence the north Londoners can get a positive result today.

However, former Arsenal midfielder Merson doesn’t share his optimism as the Sky Sports pundit has backed Chelsea to edge this weekend’s huge game in west London 2-1.

Merson said in his column for Sky Sports:

Chelsea had a great result and Arsenal’s was disappointing. I say disappointing but I don’t know what everybody was expecting? That a new manager was going to come in and they’d wipe the floor with Man City?

I’ll go with Chelsea, 2-1, I think they’ll just have too much for Arsenal.

PAUL PREDICTS: 2-1

Across London, Tottenham will welcome newly-promoted Fulham to Wembley at 3pm following news of further delays to the opening of their expensive new stadium.

Spurs began the new season with a hard fought 2-1 win over Newcastle at St James’ Park so Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping to make it two wins from two with victory over Fulham.

The Cottagers will be keen to bounce back from their opening weekend defeat to Crystal Palace but Merson is predicting another tough afternoon for Slaviša Jokanović’s side as he feels Tottenham will ease to a 3-1 win at Wembley.

Merson told Sky Sports:

Fulham had a bit of a ‘welcome to the Premier League’ last weekend. They’ll be a little bit concerned after coming up and spending a lot of money, but they just didn’t put their chances away and Palace did, that’s the difference between the two leagues. The Premier League is ruthless.

You don’t want to get off to a start of played two, lost two because you’re behind the eight ball straight away. I think Tottenham will win this one but I still think Fulham will be alright.

PAUL PREDICTS: 3-1

It’s gearing up to be another exciting afternoon of Premier League action but only time will tell whether Merson’s predictions prove accurate.
