Why International Star Snubbed Man Utd Move Despite £4.5m-A-Year Contract Offer

Manchester United tried to lure Mario Mandzukic to Old Trafford with a £4.5m-per-year contract this summer but the striker opted to stay with Juventus

The Premier League transfer window may be closed but European clubs can still buy from English teams and managers are planning for the future so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip. Today, Man Utd tried to sign Mario Mandzukic….

Manchester United tried to lure Mario Mandzukic to Old Trafford with a £4.5m-per-year contract this summer but the striker opted to stay with Juventus, according to CalcioMercato.

Jose Mourinho endured a disappointing summer in the transfer window as Brazilian midfielder Fred was the only significant arrival with Lee Grant coming in as a third-choice goalkeeper while youngster Diogo Dalot isn’t expected to be a first team regular this season.

United were linked with a whole host of names but struggled to land their key defensive targets and it seems Mourinho was also left frustrated in his attempts to sign another striker this summer as he looked to bring in support for Romelu Lukaku up front.

CalcioMercato claim that Mourinho had identified Mandzukic as his primary target and Man Utd tried to lure the Croatian international to Old Trafford with an improved £4.5m-per-year contract.

The 32-year-old has been one of the most effective target-men in Europe in recent years and enjoyed spells at Wolfsburg, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid before joining Juventus in 2015.

He would have been an excellent addition to Mourinho’s squad if United were successful in their pursuit, however, CalcioMercato claim that Mandzukic snubbed a move to Old Trafford following talks with Max Allegri.

The Italian publication says the striker held talks with Allegri after United expressed their interest but the Juve boss assured him he would still be a key part of his first team plans despite the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid.
