Some fans turned on Granit Xhaka after his error almost cost Arsenal during our thrilling 3-2 victory over Watford at Vicarage Road this afternoon.

Xhaka has split opinion among fans ever since arriving in a big-money deal from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2016 but it seems a growing number are now tired of the Swiss international’s errors.

The 25-year-old has started every game under Unai Emery so far this season and was once again chosen ahead of Lucas Torreira in midfield against Cardiff at the Cardiff City Stadium this afternoon.

After Shkodran Mustafi had given us an early lead with a fine header, Xhaka lost possession with a wayward pass in first half stoppage time and it led to Cardiff snatching an equaliser just before the break.

The error sparked a backlash from angry fans on Twitter with many slamming the midfielder for his sloppy pass and pointing out this isn’t the first time Xhaka has cost us goals this season [or over the past two years for that matter].

Some fans labelled it a ‘disgraceful pass’ while others said Xhaka is ‘terrible’ and Arsenal’s ‘worst player’. While those insults may be a little harsh, there is no doubt Xhaka’s form has been disappointing and Emery must be close to handing Torreira a start in midfield.

Thankfully we recovered in the second half as goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette helped secure a vital 3-2 victory that sends us in to the international break off the back of consecutive wins.

Check out what fans have been saying about Xhaka on Twitter:

So what if a player makes one error that gifts a goal, does that cancel out every other positive contribution made? He had an assist, kept playing the ball forward and pretty much was part of our dominance (in fact, made it so). What about the players who miss(ed) chance after chance and yet get good ratings? Wenger played Xhaka in all 38 league games of last season; Emery has started him in all 4 games this season. Get used to it, folks, because that won’t change soon. Emery referred to him as “important” so admit it that you know little about the game.

While I am not saying Xaka is not to blame for the first goal of Cardiff we also need to give him credit for the Assist for the first goal Arsenal scored. He had a mixed game and I don’t think he cannot be coached to fix his errors. He was coached to change his rush behaviour he used to do. So I expect the new coach to fix his accurancy on passes. All this is based on decision making.

I agree that Xhaka has to work on his passing success rate. But remember this guy can pick a long range pass sometimes to rival Beckham,Hoddle and Purlo.(excuse my spelling).
Under Emery the pace of the game has increased and he is having to adjust as is Ozil and many others!
But I do feel Torierra deserves a run in his place at the moment.
Remember it’s a long season and all the players will be needed.
