Arsenal have suffered a fresh injury concern ahead of the trip to Newcastle United after midfielder Lucas Torreira picked up a knock playing for Uruguay, according to the Evening Standard.

Torreira started for his country against Mexico over the weekend but was substituted at half-time and sat on the bench with an ice pack on his left calf during the second half as Uruguay went on to win 4-1.

The South American midfielder will now fly back to North London to be further assessed by Arsenal’s medical team but Torreira is already considered a major doubt for the trip to Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.

The untimely injury will come as a blow as Torreira was hoping to make his full debut this weekend having been used as a substitute since joining the club from Sampdoria in the summer.

Unai Emery decided to ease Torreira in to action as he felt the player wasn’t yet fully fit following his late arrival to pre-season from the World Cup but there was a feeling he could be handed his first start at St James’ Park.

But this injury set-back means Torreira is highly unlikely to be risked against Newcastle so the 22-year-old will be looking to recover in time to start when we begin our Europa League campaign against Vorskla a week on Thursday.

If Torreira is ruled out this weekend, then we could see Matteo Guendouzi and Granit Xhaka continue at the base of midfield with Aaron Ramsey hoping to keep his place in the advanced attacking midfield position.
