Liverpool Team News: Klopp Confirms Double Injury Blow Ahead Of PSG + Firmino Update

Liverpool will be desperate to kick-off their Champions League campaign with a positive result when PSG arrive at Anfield on Tuesday night.

Liverpool will be desperate to kick-off their Champions League group stage campaign with a positive result when Paris Saint-Germain arrive at Anfield on Tuesday night.

Jurgen Klopp has been speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference this afternoon and he’s provided a team news and injury update ahead of the game.

The Reds boss gave the latest on Roberto Firmino after the South American striker was forced off during the 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Wembely after being poked in to the eye by Jan Vertonghen in the second half.

Firmino was taken to hospital in London where it was confirmed he had an abrasion on the eye but there was no serious damage so the Brazilian international was allowed to head back to Merseyside on Saturday afternoon.

Klopp says they are relieved Firmino has been given the all-clear but he’s still a doubt to face PSG so they’ll make a late decision over the forward’s involvement against the Ligue 1 champions.

When asked if Firmino is available to take on PSG, Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com:

“No idea, to be honest. He is much better. We all saw the picture and we were massively worried. But all these worries are away so he will be fine. If he will be fine for tomorrow, I don’t know in the moment.

“We are obviously in close contact with him and it improved already – but in this moment I can’t say if he will be available for tomorrow.”

If Firmino is ruled out then Liverpool will be low on options up front as Klopp has also confirmed that strikers Dominic Solanke and Divock Origi are expected to miss the Champions League clash tomorrow night.

Solanke and Origi were both on target for the Liverpool U23’s during their 3-0 win over Swansea City at the weekend but the strikers also picked up knocks in that game and are set to miss the visit of PSG on Tuesday.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Klopp said:

“Unfortunately yes, we have new injury concerns. We tried to give Divock and Dom a bit of practice [for the U23s]; they used it, they scored, but it looks like both of them will not be available for tomorrow.

“It’s not too serious. Div has a little bit of an ankle [injury]. He tried this morning and didn’t really work out too well, so he will try again tomorrow morning. With Dom, we have to see. He got a knock and we will see how that develops.

“So not good news in the moment, but we have a lot of players available and when I saw the players yesterday, there were not any other issues.”

It means Daniel Sturridge is on stand-by to start up front for Liverpool if Firmino is ruled out and joins Dejan Lovren, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adam Lallana on the sidelines against PSG.
