Unai Emery has confirmed that Petr Cech is facing around three weeks on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury against Watford this afternoon.

Cech has been our first choice goalkeeper once again this season with the veteran stopper keeping big-money summer signing Bernd Leno on the bench in the Premier League matches so far. Leno has played in the cup matches against Vorskla and Brentford but Cech was recalled for the league clash with Watford today.

However, the 36-year-old failed to complete the ninety minutes as Cech was forced off just before half time after pulling up with a hamstring injury while taking a routine goal kick in first half stoppage time.

The Czech legend limped off to be replaced by Leno and Emery has confirmed to reporters in his post-match press conference that Cech will be assessed by the club doctors on Sunday but he’s facing 2-3 weeks on the sidelines.

Emery is quoted as saying by Goal journalist Chris Wheatley:

It will be a blow to Cech to have picked up this injury as he has been performing very well recently and was our best player during the 2-0 win over Everton last weekend.

However, Cech’s injury opens the door for Leno to stake his claim for the first team shirt and the 26-year-old put-in a strong display after coming on this afternoon as he made a superb crucial save to deny Troy Deeney when the score was still at 0-0.

Let’s hope Cech’s injury isn’t too serious and he is only out for a couple of weeks but I must admit I’m excited to see how Leno does during the upcoming league games with Fulham and Leicester.
