[Video Highlights] Sporting Lisbon 0-1 Arsenal: Welbeck Nets Vital Winner
Arsenal put one foot in the knockout stages of the Europa League after beating Sporting Lisbon 1-0 at the Estádio José Alvalade this evening thanks to a Danny Welbeck strike.
It was a fairly uneventful first half as neither side created many clear cut chances but Arsenal stepped things up after the break as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang forced the Sporting goalkeeper in to a sold early save from a tight angle.
The Gabon international will feel he should have broken the deadlock just minutes later as he raced through on goal but saw his chipped effort superbly saved by Renan Ribeiro.
Danny Welbeck then saw a lovely headed goal harshly ruled out for a slight push but the England hitman didn’t have to wait long for his goal as he raced clear to fire home in the 77th minute to make it 1-0 to the Arsenal.
Sporting pushed for an equaliser but Arsenal held to to secure a vital 1-0 win that sees us move three points clear at the top of Group E and puts us to within touching distance of the knockout stages.
