A selection of Arsenal fans have destroyed Shkodran Mustafi after he gave away a crucial penalty during the 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Sunday afternoon.

Mustafi went in to the game in decent form as he’s played a key role in our recent 11-game winning streak and the German centre-back was preferred ahead of Sokratis to start alongside Rob Holding in the middle of the back four today.

However, the 26-year-old made a poor decision to go to ground and chop down Cheikhou Kouyate on the stroke of half-time to gift Palace a penalty which was converted by Luka Milivojevic to give the hosts a half-time lead.

It didn’t take long for fans to vent their frustration towards Mustafi on social media as it’s certainly not the first time his reckless challenges and brainless decisions have cost Arsenal at key moments in games.

Some fans labelled the centre-back a ‘liability’, some demand he be sold in January while others claimed he’s a ‘joke of a defender’ so it’s safe to say some supporters weren’t impressed by his efforts today.

Luckily we came back in to the game in the second half and levelled things up with a stunning Granit Xhaka free-kick before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang poked home at the far post to make it 2-1.

However, Palace were awarded a controversial penalty in the 82nd minute after Wilfried Zaha appeared to go down easily under minimal contact from Xhaka and Milivojevic concerted to make it 2-2 – ending our winning run.

Here is what some fans have been saying about Mustafi:

I don’t rate Mustafi either. But this one is a bit harsh. Mustafi has half a second in which to clear – a few yards from our goal line. The Oppo does what they do … puts himself in the way of the tackle or clearance kick so as to create the foul. Then goes down screaming blue murder. Almost as bad as Hazard at his best.
