Manchester United fans have been reacting on social media after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was confirmed as their new interim manager until the end of the season.

United sacked Jose Mourinho on Tuesday morning after a disastrous first half to the 2018/19 season with Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to Liverpool leaving the Red Devils sitting sixth in the table – 11 points off the top four and 19 behind the league leaders.

The club confirmed they would appoint a caretaker manager until the end of the season before naming Mourinho’s permanent successor in the summer and Solskjaer soon emerged as a shock contender for the role.

United announced on ManUtd.com this morning that Solskjaer has been given the job with the former striker taking charge of the team with immediate effect while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process to hire a new full-time manager.

Mike Phelan will also return to the club as first-team coach having previously served under Sir Alex Ferguson while the pair will also work alongside Micheal Carrick and Kieran McKenna.

Solskjaer will leave Molde on a temporary basis with the Norwegian club claiming the 45-year-old will return to them in May 2019 to resume his position as manager.

The majority of United fans seem happy with the appointment with most welcoming their hero back to Old Trafford. Solskjaer spent 11 years at United – scoring 126 goals – and will forever be remembered as a club legend after scoring the winner in the 1999 Champions League final to secure the treble.

One fan claims Solskjaer could repeat the feat as manager after responding to his appointment with ‘treble incoming!’ while many others gave the former striker a warm reception on social media.

However, there were some United fans who aren’t impressed with one claiming he’s a ‘terrible’ manager due to Solskjaer’s poor record at Cardiff where he was sacked after less than a year in charge having led them to relegation from the Premier League.
