Liverpool tightened their grip at the top of the table with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Newcastle United at Anfield this afternoon.

The Reds started on the front foot and opened the scoring early on when Dejan Lovren lashed home a superb volley to make it 1-0 in the 11th minute after Newcastle failed to clear a corner.

Mohamed Salah then converted from the penalty spot shortly after half time after he was tugged down in the area before Xherdan Shaqiri came off the bench to make it 3-0 from close range after being set-up by Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool completed a comfortable afternoon’s work when Fabinho headed home from a corner to make it 4-0 late on and maintain the Merseysiders excellent record.

With Manchester City also losing to Leicester City 2-1 at the King Power Stadium this afternoon, it means Liverpool now hold a six point lead over second placed Tottenham at the top of the Premier League table.
