Some Arsenal fans savaged Stephan Lichtsteiner on social media after his poor header led to a Brighton equaliser during the 1-1 draw at the Amex Stadium this evening.

Lichtsteiner was recalled at right-back today with Ainsley Maitland-Niles dropping to the bench following his run-out during the win against Burnley at the Emirates last time out.

The game started well for the Gunners as we opened the scoring in the 7th minute when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang curled home a superb goal following some great work from Alexandre Lacazette.

We could have doubled our lead with Aubameyang missing a superb chance to make it 2-0 and Arsenal were made to pay as Lichtsteiner’s poor defensive header from a simple ball over the top led to the Brighton equaliser in the 35th minute.

It capped a poor game from the Swiss international as he was woeful in defence and wasted a number of decent opportunities going forward with his crossing particularly suspect.

Some Arsenal fans were quick to criticise the full-back with one saying he ‘offers nothing’ to our game while another supporter claimed the 34-year-old has been ‘awful’.

Several fans demanded Unai Emery picks Maitland-Niles over Lichtsteiner from now on while another suggested the former Juventus defender should do the decent thing and retire.

It’s safe to say it was a poor performance from Lichtsteiner against Brighton today and he’s proven to be a disappointing signing since arriving on a free transfer in the summer.

The sooner Hector Bellerin returns from his calf injury the better as Arsenal sorely miss him and we clearly don’t have any adequate back-up when the Spaniard is unavailable.
