Man Utd have held talks with the agent of Kostas Manolas and are willing to meet his £32.3m buy-out clause after offering him a lucrative contract

The January transfer window is open and managers are working hard on strengthening their squads and identifying targets for the summer so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest rumours. Today, Man Utd are linked with Kostas Manolas…

Manchester United have held talks with the agent of Kostas Manolas and are willing to meet his £32.3m buy-out clause after offering the Roma defender a lucrative contract, according to reports in Italy via the Mirror.

Manolas has been one of the best centre-backs in Europa since joining Roma from Olympiacos in 2014 and his superb performances at the heart of defence have seen the Greek international linked with a move to the Premier League in recent transfer windows.

United are the latest club to be credited with an interest as the Manchester giants look to strengthen their options at the back having failed to sign any of their defensive targets back in the summer.

Former manager Jose Mourinho was desperate to sign a top class centre-back during the last window and, despite his exit from the club, Man Utd are pressing ahead with their efforts to finally land an upgrade on the likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.

It appears United have identified Manolas as a prime target as the Mirror are citing Gazzetta dello Sport as reporting that the Red Devils have stepped-up their attempts to sign the Greek star.

The source of the information comes from Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Nicolo Schira, who claims United have held talks with Manolas’s agent Mino Raiola and are willing to meet the defenders £32.3m [€36m] buy out clause.

The buy out figure can only be triggered in the summer so United will have to wait until the end of the season to complete the deal as Roma are reluctant to lose Manolas mid-season, but Schira says Man Utd have offered the player a lucrative deal worth around £92,000-a-week [€6m per year] in order to make the move to Old Trafford.

Roma appear resigned to losing the 27-year-old in the summer and the report says the Italians are already lining-up Sampdoria’s Joachim Andersen as a potential replacement.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but Manolas would be a superb signing for Man Utd if they could pull it off and he’d be a major improvement on the centre-backs currently available to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
