Liverpool plotting £8m swoop for 27-year-old international star

Liverpool are plotting a summer swoop to sign James Forrest and could land the Celtic attacker for just £8m this summer, according to reports

The January transfer window is open and managers are working hard on strengthening their squads and identifying targets for the summer so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest rumours. Today, Liverpool are linked with James Forrest….

Liverpool are plotting a summer swoop to sign James Forrest and could land the Celtic attacker for just £8m at the end of the season, according to the Scottish Sun.

Forrest has been with boyhood club Celtic his entire career as he joined their youth system as a child and progressed through the ranks before breaking into the first team in 2010.

The 27-year-old is now a vital part of Brendan Rodgers’ starting eleven and the winger has continued his fine form with 11 goals and 17 assists in his 34 appearances in all competitions so far this campaign.

Forrest is also a regular in the Scotland squad with 5 goals in his 26 caps and it appears his impressive performances for club and country have caught the attention of Liverpool chiefs.

The Scottish Sun claim that Jurgen Klopp has been tracking Forrest for several months and while the Liverpool boss isn’t looking to make any major additions to his squad this winter, the Merseysiders are plotting a summer swoop for the attacker.

Forrest is under contract with Celtic until 2022 but the newspaper suggests that Liverpool could get a deal agreed with the Scottish champions for just £8m – which is a relative bargain for an international attacker in today’s market.

Klopp has one of the most lethal front three’s in world football with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all virtually guaranteed their places in the Liverpool eleven while Xherdan Shaqiri has proven to be an excellent signing since arriving from Stoke.

So it would be extremely difficult for Forrest to break in to their side on a regular basis, however, Klopp knows he needs a large squad if Liverpool are to compete in four competitions next season.

The are going great guns in the Premier League and Champions League this season but Liverpool’s ‘B team’ crashed out during the early stages of both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup this campaign so reinforcements are needed to improve squad depth.

Forrest is predominantly a left winger but he’s also capable of playing on the right if needed so he’d provide a top quality back-up for the likes of Salah and Mane if he makes a move to Anfield this summer.
