Boss responds to reports linking Man Utd with swoop for £100m star

Carlo Ancelotti has dismissed suggestions Kalidou Koulibaly wants to leave the club amid reports Man Utd will launch a mega bid for the defender

The January transfer window is open and managers are working hard on strengthening their squads and identifying targets for the summer so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest rumours. Today, the latest on Man Utd’s pursuit of Kalidou Koulibaly…

Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti has dismissed suggestions Kalidou Koulibaly wants to leave the club amid reports Manchester United are ready to launch a mega bid for the defender, according to the Express.

Koulibaly has become one of the best centre-backs in world football since joining Napoli from Genk in 2014 with his superb performances in defence helping the club challenge Juventus for the Serie A title in recent years.

However, the Senegal international’s future at the San Paolo Stadium has been called in to question amid speculation he’s unhappy in Italy after being on the end of vile racist abuse in matches with Inter Milan.

Koulibaly has been strongly linked with a move to Man Utd with the Metro reporting last week that the centre-back has informed Napoli chiefs he wants to move to Old Trafford in a deal that could cost around £100m [via the Express].

United have been scouring the market for a top class central defender for some time after failing to strengthen their back-line in the summer and Koulibaly has seemingly emerged as a prime target.

However, Ancelotti has dismissed the reports by claiming that the 27-year-old is happy in Naples and has no wish to leave Italy any time soon. The Napoli boss is quoted as saying by the Express:

“In England, they write that Koulibaly can leave because of the problem of racism,”

“I do not think so, Koulibaly is happy in Naples, he’s upset like others, but it will not be a trigger for a goodbye.

“He never showed it, he wants to stay in Naples and in Italy, a country he likes very much.”

The Express suggest that United may not be put off by Koulibaly’s £100m price-tag but it seems Ancelotti is confident the player is content at Napoli, despite the racist abuse he’s been receiving recently.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but Koulibaly would be a superb signing if United could pull it off and he’d be a huge upgrade on the likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.
