Man Utd steal march on Liverpool & Tottenham after holding talks over £25m attacker

Man Utd have stolen a march on Liverpool and Tottenham after making contact with PSV Eindhoven over the availability of attacker Steven Bergwijn

The January transfer window is in full swing and managers are working hard on strengthening their squads and identifying targets for the summer so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest rumours. Today, the latest on Steven Bergwijn…

Manchester United have stolen a march on Liverpool and Tottenham after making contact with PSV Eindhoven over the availability of attacker Steven Bergwijn, according to the Mirror.

Bergwijn came through the youth system at Ajax but joined PSV in 2011 and has developed in to one of the most highly-rated youngsters in Dutch football since breaking in to the first team over the past three years.

The 21-year-old is now an established first team regular and has already provided 9 goals and 9 assists in 17 Eredivisie appearances so far this season while he’s also earned 2 caps for the Dutch national team.

Bergwijn’s huge potential has attracted interest from the Premier League with The Sun reporting last week that Man Utd and Tottenham had expressed their interest while the Mirror claim that Liverpool are also in the race to sign the £25m-rated attacker.

Mauricio Pochettino failed to add to his squad last summer and is under pressure to dip in to the transfer market this month after losing Dele Alli and Harry Kane to injury so the Tottenham boss could be eyeing Bergwijn as the man to strengthen his attacking options.

Jurgen Klopp has one of the most deadly attacks in Europe at his disposal but the Liverpool manager knows he needs more depth if they’re to compete on all four fronts and it seems the Merseysiders are also keen on Bergwijn.

However, Man Utd have stolen a march on their rivals as the Mirror claim they’ve now made contact with PSV to enquire about Bergwijn’s availability and asked to be kept informed of his situation.

The newspaper says United scouts watched the young attacker in action during a 2-2 draw with Emmen last weekend and followed that up with a call to PSV chiefs so it seems they have a serious interest in signing the Dutch wonderkid.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made a dream start to life as caretaker manager at Old Trafford but United know they need to strengthen if they’re to get back challenging for trophies again and Bergwijn could be a star for the future.

However, not only will United face competition from the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham, but the Mirror says Bayern Munich and Inter Milan are among the European clubs keen on Bergwijn so a bidding war could ensue over the coming weeks.
