Arsenal and Liverpool have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Adrien Rabiot as the midfielder has agreed a contract with Barcelona ahead of a free transfer move this summer, according to reports in France via the Mirror.

Rabiot has been with PSG since joining their youth ranks in 2010 and he’s gone on to make 226 appearances for the first team but the midfielder is set to walk away on a free transfer when his contract expires in June.

The 23-year-old has failed to agree terms over an extension at the Parc des Princes and has been frozen out of the first team squad by boss Thomas Tuchel after making it clear he felt his future lay away from the Ligue 1 champions.

The Frenchman’s situation has alerted teams here in the Premier League with the Mirror claiming that Arsenal and Liverpool are among the clubs to have expressed their interest in luring Rabiot to England on a free transfer this summer.

Unai Emery is in the market for another midfielder after Aaron Ramsey agreed a deal to join Juventus when his contract runs out at the end of the season and it seems Arsenal had identified Rabiot as a potential replacement.

Liverpool are also being tipped to dip into the market for another midfielder as Jordan Henderson has struggled with niggling injuries this season while James Milner is coming towards the end of his career and Rabiot is also reportedly on Jurgen Klopp’s radar.

However, it seems Arsenal and Liverpool are in for disappointment as the Mirror are citing a report from Le Parisien that claims Rabiot has verbally agreed to join Barcelona at the end of the season.

The French outlet says the PSG midfielder has agreed terms with Barca over a contract worth around £170,000-a-week and will be handed a £9m signing-on fee by the Spanish giants when he completes his free transfer move to the Nou Camp this summer.

Nothing has been made official as yet so there could still be hope for Arsenal and Liverpool but it looks increasingly likely that Rabiot will be heading to La Liga this summer and he’ll be an excellent signing for Barcelona.

The Catalans have already agreed a deal to sign Frenkie de Jong from Ajax so Rabiot’s arrival this summer would further strengthen their options in the middle of the park which could fuel speculation surrounding the future of Ivan Rakitic.
