Kieran Trippier scored a comedy own goal as Tottenham’s title challenge all-but ended with a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this evening.

It was a cagey start to the game with both sides looking to bounce back from weekend disappointments and Gonzalo Higuain had twice gone close to opening the scoring for Chelsea before the deadlock was finally breached.

Cesar Azpilicueta set Pedro free down the right flank and the Spaniard cut inside before firing through Hugo Lloris’s legs from a tight angle at the near post to give Chelsea a vital lead in the 57th minute.

Tottenham struggled to get themselves back in to the game as they searched for an equaliser and it was Chelsea who would wrap things up in bizarre fashion as Trippier passed the ball in to his own net after messing up a simple back-pass in the 83rd minute.

There was no way back for Spurs so they slump to a second consecutive defeat which leaves them sitting nine points adrift of leaders Liverpool and just seven points clear of sixth-placed Chelsea.
