Manchester United are on the verge of agreeing a potential £20m deal to sign Swansea City winger Daniel James as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer closes-in on his first summer signing, according to the Evening Standard.
Solskjaer is being tipped to overhaul the squad he inherited from Jose Mourinho after finishing sixth in the Premier League this season and a pacey winger is reportedly high on the Norwegian coaches agenda.
The Evening Standard claim that United are prepared to pay in excess of £80m to sign Jadon Sancho but are now resigned to having to wait at least another year to get their hands on the 19-year-old as Borussia Dortmund are determined not to sell this summer.
This has left Man Utd looking at alternative targets and James emerged as a prime candidate over the weekend when Sky Sports reported that United were in talks with Swansea over a deal to sign the flying winger.
It appears a transfer is close to completion as the Evening Standard claim today that Man Utd are on the verge of wrapping-up a deal worth around £15m that could rise to around £20m with add-ons.
The newspaper says Solskjaer is hopeful the deal for James will be concluded imminently and he’s informed executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward that he wants all new signings wrapped-up by July 1 ahead of their pre-season tour of Australia and the Far East.
United are being linked with a whole host of marquee names in the media but the Evening Standard says Solskjaer wants to sign younger players who can be molded into future stars and James fits the bill perfectly.
The 21-year-old joined the Swansea youth system in 2014 and he’s racked up 33 appearances since breaking into the first team. He’s also already made an impact at international level having received two caps for Wales and he scored the winner against Slovakia during their Euro 2020 qualifier back in March.
James is known for his blistering pace and the fact he’s two-footed means he can operate on either flank so he’d be a very useful addition to the United squad if they can get this proposed deal over the line.

However, the Welsh international’s arrival would cast further doubt over the future’s of Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez with the duo being heavily linked with moves away from Old Trafford following disappointing campaigns.
