Man Utd offer star £12m-a-year deal as Solskjaer tries to secure key new signing

Managers are working hard trying to strengthen their squads during the summer transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Today, Manchester United are linked with Matthijs de Ligt…

Manchester United have offered Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt a contract worth £12.3m per season as they look to beat Barcelona to his signature this summer, according to reports in Spain via the Daily Mail.

De Ligt is one of the hottest young talents in world football after enjoying a meteoric rise to stardom since breaking into the Ajax first team and he skippered the side to a domestic double as well as the semi-finals of the Champions League this season.

The 19-year-old has been strongly tipped to join Ajax team-mate Frenkie de Jong in joining Barcelona this summer but that move appears to have stalled amid speculation de Ligt is still considering his options.

Man Utd have emerged as serious contenders for his signature and the Daily Mail claim Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made the Dutch international a top target as he looks to strengthen his back four this summer following a hugely disappointing campaign.

The newspaper is now citing a report from Sport that claims Man Utd have offered de Ligt a huge contract worth £12.3m per season [£236,000-a-week] in order to snub Barcelona in favour of a move to Old Trafford.

The Spanish outlet says Barcelona won’t compete with United in terms of the financial package they’re offering so the Manchester giants are now in a strong position to snap-up the hugely talented centre-back this summer.

We’ll have to wait and see if the likes of Man City or Liverpool step-up their interest as they’ve also been linked with de Ligt recently but as it stands it’s Man Utd who’re in pole position to sign the Ajax captain if he turns his back on Barcelona.

The Dutch international would be a sensational signing if United can pull it off as he’d be a huge upgrade on the likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones so de Ligt would be a key player in Solskjaer’s rebuilding job at Old Trafford if they could get a deal agreed.

Yikes! If De Ligt turns this offer down at 19 years of age, he’s demented. He must grab it with all four paws.
