Manchester United have tabled an opening offer worth around £40.5m for Lyon striker Moussa Dembele as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to kick-start his summer overhaul, according to reports.
Solskjaer is gearing-up for a busy few months as he looks to build a side capable of competing for top honours again after finishing sixth in the Premier League this season and a new striker appears to be on the agenda.
Romelu Lukaku is being strongly linked with a move to Italy while Alexis Sanchez is also being tipped to leave Old Trafford this summer so United are in the market for a new forward and Dembele has emerged as a potential target.
According to Goal, Man Utd have been tracking Dembele for some time and and have now made an official approach to Lyon for the 22-year-old’s services after watching him score 23 goals in all competitions this season following his move from Celtic 12 months ago.
Goal suggest United’s offer is worth around £35m but Get French Football News claim sources close to the negotiations have confirmed the offer was closer to £40.5m [€46m] and Lyon are yet to respond to the opening bid.
Dembele has two years remaining on his current contract so Lyon are under no immediate pressure to sell this summer and they have Champions League football to look forward to next season – something United can’t offer the striker.
The lack of Champions League football might be a problem for Dembele but I’m sure United will look to make up for it by offering the Frenchman a bumper contract if they manage to get a deal agreed with Lyon.
Dembele came through the youth ranks at Paris Saint-Germain but made his name in Scotland during a two-year spell at Celtic where he scored 51 goals in 94 games before earning a move to Lyon last summer.

The young forward has also netted 11 goals in 19 games for the French Under-21 side so he does have a decent pedigree in front of goal but it remains to be seen whether he’d be a success here in the Premier League.
