Arsenal and Manchester United are being tipped to do-battle over the signing of Jerome Boateng after Bayern Munich made it clear they’ll sell the centre-back for £20m this summer, according to the Mirror.
Boateng has been one of the best defenders in European football since joining Bayern from Manchester City in 2011 as he’s made 286 appearances to help the German giants win a whole host of honours including seven Bundesliga titles and the Champions League.
However, the 30-year-old’s first team place came under threat last season as Boateng started just 19 league games and he’ll find regular football even harder to come by next year as Bayern have already got deals in place to sign defensive duo Benjamin Pavard and Lucas Hernandez.
Niko Kovac is set to remain as Bayern manager for next season and it’s led to speculation that Boateng will be on the move after recently going public with his frustration at being benched for key games during the second half of the campaign.
The Mirror claim Bayern Munich have made it clear they will sell Boateng for £20m this summer and this news has seemingly alerted clubs here in the Premier League with Arsenal and Man Utd tipped to battle-it-out over his signature.
Arsenal desperately need to strengthen their defence after another poor season at the back that saw them concede 51 Premier League goals and Unai Emery is expected to target a new centre-back amid speculation over the future’s of Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also being linked with a number of centre-backs after United conceded 54 goals last season and the Norwegian coach could be eyeing long-term Man Utd target Boateng as an upgrade on the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling.
Boateng would certainly bring a huge amount of experience if he were to join Arsenal or United as he’s done it all at domestic level with Bayern Munich and helped Germany win the World Cup back in 2014.
However, it remains to be seen whether Arsenal or United will be prepared to pay £20m for a player who turns 31 in September and has had his fair share of injury problems over the past few years.
