Manchester United are in talks to sign Mike Maignan after identifying the Lille goalkeeper as an alternative to £53m-rated Barcelona stopper Jasper Cillessen, according to reports via the Metro.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to be a busy man over the coming weeks as he looks to revamp a squad that finished sixth in the Premier League this season and unfortunately the United boss could be forced into the market for a new goalkeeper.
David De Gea has been one of Man Utd’s key players over the past five years but the Spanish international has just one year remaining on his contract and has so far refused to sign an extension amid speculation he could head to Spain or France.
The uncertainty over De Gea’s future means United are on the look out for potential replacement’s and the Metro claim talks were held with Barcelona over Cillessen but the Catalans made it clear they wanted the full value of his £53m release clause.
It seems United aren’t prepared to pay that kind of money for the Dutchman as the Metro are citing a report from the Daily Record that says the Manchester giants have now turned their attention to Maignan.
The newspaper claims United are in talks with Lille over a deal to sign the 23-year-old shot-stopper and the Ligue 1 outfit are demanding around £31m [€35m] for his signature this summer – which is considerably less than Barca want for Cillessen.
Maignan has just come off the back of an impressive campaign that saw Lille finish second in the Ligue 1 table behind PSG and they ended the season with the best defensive record in the division having conceded 33 goals in 38 games.
The 6ft 1in star was voted as the best goalkeeper in Ligue 1 this season and has recently earned his first call-up to the French national team squad ahead of their European Championship qualifiers against Turkey and Andorra this month.

Obviously Man Utd will still hope to agree a new contract with David De Gea over the coming weeks but if he still refuses to commit his future to Old Trafford then we could see him sold and I think Maignan would be an excellent replacement.
