Managers are working hard trying to strengthen their squads during the summer transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Today, Man Utd have stepped up their interest in Ivan Rakitic…

Manchester United have made contact with Barcelona over a potential deal to sign Ivan Rakitic this summer and the Catalans are ready to cash-in if £50m is put on the table, according to reports in Spain via the Mirror.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to build a squad capable of competing for top honours again after United finished sixth in the Premier League last season and he’s already got a deal in place to sign winger Daniel James from Swansea City.

However, another central midfielder is also on the agenda as Ander Herrera has left the club after running down his contract while speculation continues to suggest Paul Pogba could leave Old Trafford this summer.

Rakitic has long been touted as a Man Utd transfer target and it appears they’ve renewed their interest this summer as the Mirror are citing a report from Sport that claims United have made contact with Barcelona to discuss a possible deal.

The Spanish publication says United have asked Barca to name their price for the Croatian international and it’s believed the Catalan giants are prepared to cash-in if an offer worth in the region of £50m is put on the table.

Barcelona have already signed Frenkie de Jong from Ajax and they need to raise money to help fund their pursuits of Matthijs de Ligt and Antoine Griezmann, and it seems they are willing to sacrifice Rakitic this summer.

The report claims Rakitic is in no hurry to leave Barcelona but the La Liga champions have made it clear they aren’t going to offer him a new contract and Man Utd are already aware of the 31-year-old’s wage demands.

Rakitic would be an excellent replacement for Herrera if United could successfully lure him to Old Trafford as he’s a top class midfielder who would bring a huge amount of experience with him.
