Manchester United are ready to make a late play to hijack Barcelona’s move for Antoine Griezmann by offering the £95m Atletico Madrid hitman a bumper contract worth £450,000-a-week, according to The Sun.
Griezmann has become one of the best forwards in world football since joining Atletico from Real Sociedad in 2014 with the Frenchman contributing an impressive 133 goals and 55 assists in his 257 appearances for Diego Simeone’s side over the last five years.
However, the 28-year-old confirmed last month that he wants to leave the Wanda Metropolitano in search of a new challenge and he’s been widely expected to complete a move to La Liga champions Barcelona.
The Atletico Madrid chief executive Gil Marin suggested earlier this week that Griezmann’s move to Barca has been in the pipeline for months but the striker appeared to contradict this claim after saying he could yet move to a club outside of Spain.
Speaking after France’s 4-0 Euro 2020 qualifying win over Andorra on Tuesday night, Griezmann is quoted by The Sun as saying:
“I don’t know if I will stay in La Liga. I know where I want to go. I am also keen to get this over with as quickly as possible.”
With a deal to the Nou Camp yet to be finalised, it’s opened the door for Man Utd and The Sun claims they are ready to launch a late move to hijack Barcelona’s proposed deal by offering Atletico £95m for Griezmann’s signature.
The newspaper says the Manchester giants will also tempt the French international with a lucrative contract worth £450,000-a-week in order to make a sensational move to Old Trafford this summer.
A lack of Champions League football next season could be a sticking point so United know they need to offer Griezmann a deal he can’t refuse if he’s to snub the likes of Barcelona in favour of a switch to Manchester.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to revamp his squad this summer and he’s already snapped-up young winger Daniel James from Swansea City. However, with Romelu Lukaku strongly linked with a move to Italy, United could need a new striker and it appears Griezmann is firmly on their radar.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming days but while Griezmann would be an excellent signing for United, I still think he’ll probably end up joining Barcelona this summer.
